Mass Timber Residence
Artius Interior has recently completed an innovative 6,500 square-foot residence in Vagator, located in the northern state of Goa, marking an important milestone in sustainable construction in India. This two-storey structure in Glulam adopted numerous Rothoblaas solutions to address a number of environmental and structural challenges.
In order to cope with the humid conditions, particularly prevalent during the monsoon season, the foundations were waterproofed with the TERMI FLOOR membrane, providing lasting protection against not only humidity but also termites and other insects.
The TRASPIR EVO 300 and 220 membranes were used to shield the remaining parts of the timber structure from water infiltration, while at the same time ensuring the construction's adequate breathability. Both membranes feature a functional monolithic layer, which ensures UV resistance and improves the long-term durability of their waterproofing properties.
To ensure optimal sealing between the joints and structural connections, FLEXI BAND was used, a flexible, weather-resistant sealant. NAIL BAND was employed to protect and seal crucial nail points, such as those around the perforations in the membranes resulting from anchor systems.
GIPS BAND ensured the internal connections remained sealed and improved soundproofing between the various rooms in the residence.
By integrating the SILENT WALL system into the interior walls, Artius was able to significantly improve the building's soundproofing and create a more peaceful, private atmosphere, even during the high winds typical of the monsoon season.
Lastly, Rothoblaas fall arrest systems, crucial during the assembly of the structures at height, were used to ensure safety during construction.
The use of Glulam, a cutting-edge technology in the development of Mass Timber structures, proved essential in this project. The resulting beams, formed by glued layers of timber, offer superior strength and flexibility compared to traditional timber, enabling bold yet sustainable architectural designs. The project not only complies with seismic and wind load regulations in a particularly exposed area, but also promotes a reduced carbon footprint by using sustainable materials and construction techniques that minimise waste. The building, featuring large windows, blends in with its coastal surroundings while maintaining a low environmental impact and promoting a healthy, eco-friendly lifestyle.
Timber is a highly energy-efficient material in both cold and warm climates. Explore the solutions most suited to your climate zone now.
